So, you want to know more about me? Well there isn’t much to tell, but here goes:

My name is Albert van Niekerk. I am just a regular 27 year-old with an irregular need to travel. I’m a South African copywriter, blogger and travel writer. I lived in Thailand for a while and traveled through Southeast Asia looking for adventure. At the moment I am working as a freelance copywriter for an ad agency in Cape Town whilst studying viticulture and oenology full-time. Follow me on Twitter @AlbertNiekerk or email me at: pavniekerk@gmail.com

  1. Hi Albert , did you see that your pic won the photo of the month at the Cape Wheel? Please check your inbox for details

  2. Great blog! Question, did you just travel around the islands of Thailand? Or did you go to other parts such as cities around Bangkok and northern Thailand? I leave for Thailand in a few weeks and I was hoping to get some tips!

    • Thanks a lot! I never got to the Northern parts of Thailand unfortunately. It is amazing from what I’ve heard though. Chiang Mai is said to be unbelievable so I will have to go check it out when I get back to Thailand one day.

      • Haha, that’s where I’m heading out to first – I also wanted to go to Ayutthaya, Pattaya, and possible Phanom Rung National Park – have you been? And if not, do you have any general suggestions on transportation and overnight stay for the independent student traveler on a budget?

  3. Are you traveling alone or with others? Public transport is actually really accessible and easy to use in Thailand, it just requires a little bit of planning beforehand. I would definitely recommend the overnight trains. I took one from Surat Thani to Bangkok and it was an amazing experience. Don’t expect luxury though.
You will find more than enough low cost accommodation in Thailand, that is if you are willing to sometimes stay in rather dodgy places.
